Hey Little Girl in the High School Sweater
This outfit is part of my ongoing ~high school vibes~ theme. I wear saddle shoes almost every day and my favorite thing in the world is when older women tell me that it reminds them of when they were in grade school. This outfit formula (blouse+sweater+saddle shoes) is something I wear frequently during the fall and winter season because I'm usually in a rush in the morning and it just works every time. I was particularly excited to wear this sweater because I purchased it at Goodwill over the summer for $5 and it's 100% cashmere and just perfect. I thought I'd switch up my environment for once since I usually take outfit photos in my backyard and it worked really well with my theme which was a plus!

High School Vibes
Every Fall I become obsessed with ~school vibes~, meaning all things that remind me of high school and being a miserable angsty teenager. I went to a public high school but prior to that I went to a Catholic school from grades pre-k to eighth grade (yeah, I know). Naturally, I loathed the uniforms we were forced to wear and anxiously counted down the days until the next "dress down day". Now it's been some time since I've been in middle school, but I can't help but look back and daydream about how I would have styled my uniform had I known anything about makeup, cute shoes and tailoring (not the most flattering garment). I mean, look at the way Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells wears my exact uniform. Why didn't I think of wearing my uniform with a letterman jacket, hoop earrings and a bat??Probably because I would have been sent to the principal's office and because I was lame.
My fixation on uniforms doesn't just apply to the Catholic variety. I've had a lifelong obsession with cheerleading uniforms. Up until college, I had never been to a school that had an official cheerleading team. In middle school we had a cheerleading club that met for one hour every Tuesday and was taught by the 5th grade history teacher up until funds ran out after just two months. In high school, my school didn't have any sports teams which meant no cheerleading squad. My only option was to relish over the perfect combination of clean cut uniforms, white sneakers and high bouncy pony tails in high school movies and television shows. This is going to be an ongoing theme for my next few posts these upcoming weeks so this is just somewhat of a preface and a space for me to purge all of my favorite ~high school vibe~ inspirations. Shout out to all the Catholic High School girls who rolled up their skirts when the sisters weren't looking, you make the world go round.
Let's just appreciate Alexis Krauss being everything I should have been in middle school. |
A little over a year ago Petra Collins did a shoot for Rookie Mag which was everything I could ever hope for |

Movie Muse monday:Suzy Bishop
I've been really busy and haven't gotten the chance to do any outfit posts (not even a Halloween one!), but I don't want that to kep me from updating this blog. I've been on Polyvore lately and I noticed that a lot of my sets are inspired by some of my favorite ladies on the big screen. That's how I came up with the idea for "Movie Muse Monday"; this gives me the opportunity to update my blog more frequently and practice my writing outside of the usual "this is what I wore..."
That brings us to this week's movie muse: Suzy Bishop from Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. If you haven't seen it already you definitely should get around to doing that. It's a story about young love and it's just the most charming film that I've seen in a long time. I won't give away too much (because you're going to go see it right??), but 12 year old Suzy meets Sam one summer and the two continue to write to each other over the course of a year until they agree to run away with each other the following summer. Suzy is a bit of a hot-head but like most young adults, she is simply misunderstood. She enjoys books about magic powers with a female hero ("but not always") and her favorite album is Françoise Hardy's The Yeh-Yeh Girl From Paris.
Suzy's interests play an integral role in her iconic style. She carries around a yellow suitcase to hold her favorite books and a light blue record player to listen to Françoise Hardy. She also wears a pair of binoculars around her neck and carries her cat in a woven basket. Alas these are only her practical accessories; Suzy's personal style goes way beyond practicality. Her style is a reflection of the era the movie is set in: 60s shift dresses in primary colors signature to Wes Anderson's aesthetic, white knee high socks and saddle shoes. Perhaps my favorite aspect of Suzy's personal style is her makeup, which reminds me of a 12-year-old's interpretation of Anna Karina's makeup in Une Femme est Une Femme (and I mean that in the best way possible). I've been trying to replicate Anna Karina's signature blue eyeshdow+black eyeliner since I've seen the movie and it always comes out a bit messy like Suzy's. And I love that because it seems more true to Suzy's character for it to be on the messy side.
Here's a Ployvore set I made inspired by Suzy Bishop:

Pumpkin Spice
My absolute favorite thing about fall is pumpkin everything, especially lattes. I'm not a frequent coffee drinker but I've been getting them at least 5 days a week. So this post is dedicated to my favorite things about fall: pumpkin lattes, jackets and cozy socks.
I've been practicing my jumping pose but I've still got some work to do with my face mid-jump. So obviously the only sensible thing to do is replace my face with a cat's. |

Bad Girls Do It Well
This outfit is pretty different from my everyday style. I've been listening to/channeling a lot of M.I.A and Azealia Banks lately, so the saddle shoes+cardigans just didn't feel right. I bought this moto jacket recently and have been dying to wear an outfit that fully encapsulates the badass I feel like/AM when I wear it. I probably wouldn't wear the sports bra in public because I'd feel really exposed which is not something I'm used to or comfortable with. But it was fun to pretend in the comfort of my backyard!
I used to wear these pink docs nearly every day when I was in high school, but for the last year and a half I've primarily been wearing saddle shoes. I loved walking down the hallways in these docs; I felt like I could crush anyone who even looked at me funny. It's weird how simple things like shoes or a badass jacket can alter your mood and make you feel invincible. Anyway, this shoot was really fun and ~empowering~ so it's clear that I need to channel M.I.A into my everyday style/attitude.
